Throttle Position Sensor

In modern fuel-injected engines, precise control of the air entering the combustion chamber is paramount for performance, efficiency, and emissions. The component responsible for relaying the driver’s throttle input to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the Throttle Position Sensor. Mounted directly on the throttle body shaft, this critical sensor acts as a precise translator, continuously monitoring the angle of the throttle plate.
The TPS functions as a variable resistor or potentiometer. As the accelerator pedal is pressed and the throttle plate opens, the sensor’s internal resistance changes. This creates a varying voltage signal that is sent in real-time to the vehicle’s ECU. The ECU interprets this signal as a direct indication of engine load and driver demand. This data is a fundamental input for calculating the optimal amount of fuel to inject, adjusting ignition timing, and managing transmission shift points. A properly functioning sensor ensures smooth acceleration, stable idle, and efficient power delivery.
A failing Throttle Position Sensor can cause a range of drivability issues. Symptoms often include poor acceleration, erratic idling, hesitation or surging, unexpected stalling, and an illuminated check engine light. These problems arise because the ECU receives incorrect or erratic data, leading to improper air-fuel mixture calculations. When selecting a replacement, it is crucial to choose a high-quality sensor that meets or exceeds original equipment specifications to ensure reliable communication with the vehicle’s engine management system and restore optimal engine performance.
